Popular Database Systems Pros And Cons

There is a variety of database systems, the most popular of which are Oracle, MySQL, SQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird, and others.

Oracle is a major commercial management system, intended to solve complex problems. The database system is offered in various configurations, from enterprise-class versions to personalized ones. A product of the Oracle Corporation, Oracle combines individual processes that monitor the database, running in the background. These include logical standby coordinator process, system monitor process, recovery process, database writer process, dispatcher processes, etc. The database is available in 63 language versions.

MySQL represents a database management system for multiple users accessing different databases. It is used in many web applications such as LAMP as well as popular websites, including YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, and Flickr. The database comes with a number of features, which are not implemented in other database management systems. These include community-developed storage engines, native storage engines (e.g. Archive and InnoDB), custom storage engines, and others.

Produced by Microsoft, SQL boosts scalability, functionality, and security. The SQL database management system generates databases for server-based operating systems working under Microsoft Windows. The user can access databases from the Internet, workstations, and other media.

PostgreSQL is an open source software and a database management system. A number of supported data types are featured, including CIDR blocks, MAC addresses, variable length arrays, geometric primitives, etc. Almost any new type of object can be created inside the database. Examples are procedural languages, conversions, domains, functions, and indexes. The database management system has received a number of awards, including the 2008 Developer.com Product of the Year, Database Tool and the 2004 ArsTechnica Best Server Application Award. It is a preferred database management system of prominent users such as MySpace, Yahoo!, and Skype.

Firebird is another open source software that runs on Windows, Unix, and Linux. . The product is written is C++A number of features comes with the system, such as careful writes, incremental backups, support for external functions, and referential activity.

Other tools such as GUI administrative and replication tools are available as well. Multiple access methods are also featured – .Net provider, dbExpress drivers, Python module, and others. There are several versions of the database management system, including Firebird SuperServer, Firebird Classic, and Firebird Embedded. The first version is featured with a single server for all client connections. A single copy of the server is run for all client connections with Firebird Classic. Firebird Embedded is beneficial in generating user and evaluation versions of applications, event notifications, CD-ROM catalogues, etc. The database management system received the SourceForge Community Choice Award in 2009.
